Cowpeas have many names such as south peas, black-eyed peas, stock peas. This recipe is always known as poor man food in the southern part of India. Because Brown CowPeas is cheap and this recipe doesn’t require any side dish. Brown CowPeas can improve the digestion and detoxify to eliminate toxins from the body.

Brown CowPeas Rice / Thatta Payaru Sadam / Kaaramani Sadam

Ingredients
- Thattapayiru (Brown CowPea/Kaaramani)- 1/2 cup
- Rice - 1 cup, soaked 15 mins
- Shallots (small onion)- 1/4th cup
- Green chilli -2
- Curry leaves -few
- turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Tomato -1 chopped
- For Masala
- Red chilli -4
- Fennel(Sombu/Saunf)-1/2 tsp
- Ginger - 1/2 inch
- Garlic- 5 pearls
- Cloves (Karampu/Lavang) - 2
- Cinnamon stick (Pattai/Dalchini) - 1/2 inch
Directions
- Step 1 Heat a pressure cooker and add Thattapayiru (Brown CowPeas/Kaaramani)
- Step 2 Add turmeric powder
- Step 3 Add three cups of water and Cover the lid and pressure cook in medium flame for 10 whistles.
- Step 4 Take mixer jar and red chilli
- Step 5 Add Cloves (Karampu/Lavang)
- Step 6 Add Cinnamon stick (Pattai/Dalchini)
- Step 7 Add chopped ginger
- Step 8 Add chopped garlic
- Step 9 Add Fennel(Sombu/Saunf)
- Step 10 Grind it to smooth paste. Keep it well
- Step 11 Heat a pan and add oil.
- Step 12 Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
- Step 13 Add small onion and saute it well.
- Step 14 Add green chilli and curry leaves. Saute it well.
- Step 15 Add chopped tomato and saute well until soft and mushy.
- Step 16 Add salt and turmeric powder. Saute it well.
- Step 17 Add cooked Thattapayiru (Brown CowPea/Kaaramani) and saute it well and lets it boil.
- Step 18 Add two cups of water and mix it well. Let it boil.
- Step 19 Add the ground masala paste and mix it well.
- Step 20 Add soaked rice and mix it well.
- Step 21 Cover the lid and pressure cook in medium flame for four whistles.
- Step 22 Give a quick stir.
- Step 23 You can serve it with vadams or poriyal/varuval.
