Red/brown rice is a great source of fibre, vitamin B, iron and manganese. Most of the people will use white rice for regular cooking and completely misses the red/brown rice. This variety of kozhukattai can bring red rice to home to make yummy and healthy Koulkattai/dumpling. Since its a steamed food, it could easily digest for kids and elder people.

Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai /Red Rice Kozhukattai/Broken Red Rice Dumpling preparation with step by step photos and a quick video.
Ingredients
- Broken Red Rice - 1 cup
- Salt - to taste
- Grated coconut - 1 cup
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
- Chana dal / Kadalai Paruppu - 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves -1 sprig
- Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp
- Onion - 1 chopped
- Green Chillies - 2 chopped finely
Directions
- Step 1 Take a bowl and add broken red rice.
- Step 2 Add water and rinse it well in two times.
- Step 3 Add water and soak it for 6 hours.
- Step 4 Drain the water and add it in the mixer jar. Grind it a coarse paste.
- Step 5 Add grated coconut and grind it for coarse paste. Keep it aside.
- Step 6 Take a pan to add oil.
- Step 7 Add chana dal.
- Step 8 Add Mustard Seeds / Kaduku and let it splutter
- Step 9 Add finely chopped green chilli and saute it well
- Step 10 Add curry leaves and saute it well
- Step 11 Add chopped onion and saute it well
- Step 12 Add coriander leaves and saute it well
- Step 13 Add kozhukattai batter and saute it for a minute.
- Step 14 Add salt and mix it well. Switch off the flame and let it cool down.
- Step 15 Once it’s cool down completely, grease your hand with a little oil and make oval shapes out of the mixture. Keep it on your palm and press it to give the shape as seen in the picture below. Repeat the same process for the rest of the dough.
- Step 16 Place in a steamer and cook it for 10 minutes
- Step 17 Serve it hot along with coconut chutney.
