Sweet Coconut Bun is is my all-time favorite childhood snack recipe which has plenty of sweet coconut stuffing on a soft bun and tutti frutti adds extra fancy and taste to the recipe. I had been missings this snack since it’s been more than 6 months since we have traveled to native. In Tamilnadu, Thengai Bun aka sweet coconut bun available in most of the Bakery shops. Bakery-style coconut bun made with dough from scratch and coconut filling, baked in the oven. There are similar recipes available in India – dilkush/dilpasand.

Coconut Bun Bakery Style | How to Make Thengai Bun preparation with step-by-step photos and a quick video.
Ingredients
- Milk (warm)-½ cup
- Sugar-2 tbsp
- Dry yeast -½ tbsp
- Maida / plain flour -2 cups
- Oil- 1 tsp
- Salt - ½ tsp
- Fresh shredded coconut (or) desiccated coconut -1 cup
- Tutti-frutti -½ cup
- Cashew / Kaju (chopped)-10
- Raisins - 2 tbsp
- Powdered sugar -¼ cup
Directions
- Step 1 Preheat oven to 180°C.Generously grease a pan. Set aside.
- Step 2 Take a bowl and add warm milk(If the milk is too warm it will kill the yeast and it won’t proof)
- Step 3 Add sugar and mix it well
- Step 4 Add the dry yeast and mix it well. Set aside for 5 min or till it foams up.
- Step 5 Add flour
- Step 6 Add sugar
- Step 7 Add salt and mix it well
- Step 8 Add yeast mixture and knead well for 5 minutes
- Step 9 Tuck the dough and form to a ball. Place in a large mixing bowl.
- Step 10 Apply oil all over the bowl generously.
- Step 11 Cover it with a cling wrap and set aside in a warm place until it doubles in size( for about 1 hour).
- Step 12 When it doubles, knock out the air and knead the dough for 5 mins
- Step 13 Divide the dough and tuck to make a ball.
- Step 14 Add the dough to the dusted surface and roll the round shape.
- Step 15 Place the dough on dusted plate or tray. Flatten the dough by stretching with a hand.
- Step 16 Take a mixing bowl and add fresh coconut (or) desiccated coconut.
- Step 17 Add chopped cashew
- Step 18 Add raisins
- Step 19 Add tutti-frutti
- Step 20 Add sugar and mix it well
- Step 21 Add coconut filling and cover with other sheet and seal the edges.
- Step 22 Now brush with egg or milk
- Step 23 Bake it in preheated oven for about 180°C 20-25 minutes.
- Step 24 Let it cool at least 10 minutes before slicing.
- Step 25 Serve thengai bun/coconut bun recipe warm or cooled completely.
